Court interpreters and bilingual legal staff are often asked to produce certified translations of documents when clients from non-English speaking countries interact with the US courts on matters of immigration, probate, divorce, etc. Over the past 18 years, legal translators and notaries public Margaret and Marco Hanson have prepared thousands of these certified translations, mostly of Latin American documents in Spanish. This sector is resistant to competition from AI technology, because the source files are often uneditable or handwritten, requiring human processing. However, there are standards that the translator should understand before accepting such assignments, to ensure that the translations will be accepted as legally valid. This eight-hour workshop includes hands-on practice, collaborating with colleagues to translate actual birth, marriage, death, and property certificates from Mexico into English.
