Key Terms:
- LEP: limited English proficient, meaning a person whose native language is other than English, and whose skills in English are insufficient for a certain context
- language access: interpretation, translation, and related efforts to reduce language barriers for people with limited English proficiency
- interpreter: converts between spoken languages or spoken and sign language
- translator: converts between written languages
- federal courts: courts located within US states but dealing with matters of federal law, such as interstate drug dealing
- state courts: courts located around a state and dealing with matters internal to that state, including district, county, municipal and justice courts
